This film explores the concept of what it means to be beautiful. In a culture saturated with unrealistic ideals, we are bombarded with narrow definitions of how we should look and act. Our research, including interviews with individuals worldwide, reveals and reinforces existing inequities, with Black and Brown persons with disabilities facing the greatest marginalization. This film dismantles conventional notions of beauty, celebrating the inherent strengths and unique qualities of all people, and raising awareness about the human experience of disability. Disability is a natural part of the human condition and can affect anyone at any time. We advocate for a world that embraces each individual's lived experience with respect, acceptance, and compassion.
For too long, our world has prioritized the rights and needs of individuals without disabilities. This film explores the definition of disability and exposes the systemic barriers and daily struggles faced by disabled people, struggles often unseen and unacknowledged. Historically, narratives have centered on the experiences of those in power. While the medical model frames disability as a deficiency requiring a cure, the social model shifts the focus to how the environment itself disables individuals. The social model recognizes disabled people as full human beings entitled to equal access and participation in all aspects of society.
Aware of the pervasive influence of ableism and "inspiration porn," this film strives to share stories authentically and unapologetically. It is a powerful resource filled with personal narratives and information designed to educate and illuminate the diverse experiences of individuals with disabilities – physical, psychological, and invisible. These individuals are capable, intelligent, interesting, talented, funny, strong, beautiful, and so much more. Disability is not a bad word.
